Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

His attorney entered the plea on his behalf in a US district court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would try to have the proceedings terminated for several factors including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

The former director was formally accused just days after Trump urged his top legal official to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they planned to present multiple legal requests to terminate the legal matter before a legal hearing, stating the legal action was vindictive and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to take over the legal matter.

Mr Comey's legal matter was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under influence from Donald Trump after his investigation into another political adversary - the New York official - did not succeed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

Mr Comey seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he walked into the court on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was supported by his spouse, his wife and offspring Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration recently fired.

Upon hearing to the magistrate state his legal protections and the two counts against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was asked if he grasped the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he informed the judge.

Background Context

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Donald Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the period, the director was leading an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Moscow and the election effort.

During his tenure, James Comey caused a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he stated just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was probing presidential nominee the candidate's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against the candidate were never brought, causing criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys allege Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he misled the legislative body by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the agency to release to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also accuse the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and delay" the committee by giving misleading testimony to it.

Individual Responses

In a video James Comey shared to his online platform after he was accused, he said he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of acting like a "tyrant".

"We have been aware for years that there are ramifications to opposing Donald Trump," he commented. "We will not live on our kneeling."
"I'm innocent," he added. "Therefore proceed with a trial."

The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after Donald Trump published on digital channels demanding his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, take legal action against the former director and additional individuals.
