{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with Formula 1 safety personnel

Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two safety personnel darted across the track right in his path

The alarming incident occurred on the third lap when track officials were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was getting back on the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing

Racer's Instant Response

Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"

"I rejoined with a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals dashing across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a active circuit marshals can be allowed to just dash across the track like that. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this must never be repeated"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events

"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the regulatory authority

"On lap three, track officials were informed and put on alert to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had made a pit stop, the orders to send marshals were canceled and a double yellow flag was shown in that area"

"The examination is ongoing what occurred subsequent to that time"
