The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The controversy erupted after the student reportedly posted messages on social media that appeared to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The student leader is also said to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Official notices showed that 1,228 ballots were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the future president was considered to have resigned in accordance with the society's regulations.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on Monday after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response categorically refuted that any representative acting for the student had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as the elected leader.

His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the society on a related program broadcast.

The message criticized the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a political opponent".

The statement warned that if the student were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The society had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's remarks after the activist's killing and confirmed that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
