Trump Threatens Relocation of World Cup Games from the Boston area, Olympics from Los Angeles

Former President Trump has repeatedly declared he would pressure FIFA to relocate 2026 World Cup matches from a designated city based on municipal governance, with Massachusetts now being the third targeted location to encounter such statements from the US president. Moreover, Trump suggested he would consider similar action against Los Angeles for the 2028 Summer Games due to potential safety issues.

While Trump holds no official jurisdiction to unilaterally remove either competition, he is able to exert influence the international organizations managing each event to shift host cities.

Context of Remarks

His statements were made during a news conference with Argentinian president Milei, who was visiting the presidential residence following the announcement of a multibillion-dollar rescue package for the Argentine nation. Near the end of the event, a journalist asked Trump about a recent public disturbance in Boston where law enforcement were targeted and a patrol car was burned. The reporter also questioned if such events could cause the loss of hosting duties for the 48-team soccer tournament.

“I would take them away,” he said about the World Cup matches, scheduled to be staged at the Foxborough venue. “The city's leader is ineffective … they're radical left, and activists are dominating areas of downtown. It's a significant claim, right?”

Urban Disturbances and Public Safety Concerns

Unauthorized gatherings, a social media-driven trend where groups of people gather on city streets after dark to engage in dangerous driving, have been a ongoing problem in US urban areas since the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns. Recent such gatherings have escalated into violence in Massachusetts, specifically in downtown. Yet, these gatherings are generally not seen as tied to any distinct political ideology.

“In cases where someone is failing, and I perceive there are unsafe conditions, I'd call Gianni [Infantino], who is phenomenal, and tell him it should be shifted to another location,” the former president stated publicly. “He'd do that. He wouldn’t love to do it, but he would comply. Without hesitation, he'd comply.”

FIFA Relationship

Gianni Infantino has been open his efforts to be visibly associated with Trump ahead of next year’s tournament, scheduled to be staged in 11 cities across the America along with several in the northern neighbor and three in Mexico. The FIFA president has participated at multiple White House events, arranged for Trump hand over the Club World Cup cup after the championship match, and has even rescheduled his own organization’s congress to join Trump on a visit to the Middle East this year.

This has not stopped, Trump from warning about the relocation of soccer matches from different locations. Recently, the Washington city and San Francisco came under comparable criticism, with Trump stating both locations were “governed by ideological activists who lack understanding what they are doing,” while questioning the public safety of both areas and suggesting that matches could be removed.

Official Rebuttal

FIFA vice-president Montagliani rejected Trump’s assertions when he reacted afterward at a conference in the UK capital.

“It’s our competition, FIFA’s jurisdiction, the organization determines those decisions,” he declared. “Politely to sitting presidents, the sport is transcends political figures and the game will endure their tenure and their leadership. It's the beauty of this sport, that it is more significant than a single person and more important than individual states.”

Similarly, Trump’s answer to a query about Boston veered into a parallel statement regarding the LA Olympic event.

“When I perceived LA was not going to be adequately ready, I'd relocate it to another location if I had to,” he said. “Regarding that event I might have to secure a varying approval, but we'd do that.”
